Cuando desperté, Arturo no estaba. Se había ido a bañar. El pobre de Campersson amaneció enterrado bajo la nieve.
– Creo que tenemos una situación aquí.
El pronóstico del tiempo era sumamente desconsolador. Vientos superiores a los 15 m/s, con nevadas continuas y las carreteras “impasables” por nivel de riesgo.
– ¿Qué hacemos?
– Yo digo que avancemos lento y valoremos el terreno.
Ya a bordo de Campersson, esperamos unos minutos con la calefacción encendida para que el hielo del parabrisas se derritiera. Pasamos a la gasolinera y tomamos la línea 1 rumbo a Egilsstaðir, al noreste de la Isla.
Violentos remolinos, nula visibilidad y una carretera pálida como nosotros por el miedo a la muerte.
– Esto no va a ocurrir.
– Regresemos al área de campismo.
Conectamos la corriente eléctrica a nuestro refugio ambulante, y encendimos todas las luces por dentro. Ambos gritamos al mismo tiempo:
– Unlimited power! emulando a Darth Sidious de Star Wars.
– Es una lástima que la calefacción no funcione con electricidad 😦
La resignación llegó más pronto de lo creído. Era domingo, y de Pascua, no nos caería mal un día de descanso aplicando el Netflix and Chill, sandwichitos y galletas (unas bien ricas que descubrimos en el súper).
Considerando además que nos faltaban solo 4 episodios de la última temporada de House of Cards, sonaba como un buen plan.
– Pinche Francis Underwood, es un cabrón. Lo amo.
Toda la tarde estuvimos acostados bajo el cobertor, viendo por la pequeña ventanilla cómo por algunos minutos salía el sol y dejaba de nevar, y súbito después obscurecía y comenzaba a caer la nieve de nuevo.
Para lo único que salimos fue para ir al baño y para tomarle una foto a Arturo. La usaré para promover el próximo Instameet Nacional de México en abril.
El día pasó sorpresivamente rápido, y a las 7.30 regresamos a la pizzeria (Daddi’s Pizza). Esta vez probamos la especialidad de la casa, la Pizza Mýfluga (Daddi’s Special) con salsa, queso, trucha ahumada, piñones y queso crema.
– ¡Esta pizza es única en el mundo! aseguró la dueña del local, mientras le gritoneaba al pizzero adolescente que contestara el teléfono de los pedidos.
– Y una Coca del refri (porque si la pido “al tiempo” seguramente está más fría).
Ahorita estamos checando los pronósticos para mañana; pintan ligeramente mejores, pero pase lo que pase, tenemos que salir de Reykjahlíð. Nos quedan solo 8 días en Islandia.
– Hagamos angelitos en la nieve.
– ¿Qué estás pedo o qué?
Consejos técnicos:
Road.is es una página web responsiva, muy fácil de usar también en smartphone, que sirve para checar las condiciones de los caminos en toda Islandia. En la página principal dividen la isla por regiones; basta clicar y aparecerán unos mapas bastantes completos con toda la simbología. También ofrecen números de emergencia, información y noticias de última hora.
Vedur.is es la página oficial para revisar los pronósticos del clima y cuenta con una app bastante user-friendly. La app te geolocaliza y te proporciona un pronóstico meteorológico local del mismo día (con diferentes horas) y 3 días más. Otras cualidades es que te informa sobre la velocidad del viento, tiene a disposición un mapa de las condiciones climatológicas de todo el país (con dibujos), y te manda alertas de riesgo.
Finalmente YR es una app desarrollada por el Instituto meteorológico de Dinamarca, es un poco más exacto Vedur.is pero no cubre todo el territorio Islandés.
When I woke up Arturo wasn’t there. He’d gone shower. Campersson was buried in snow.
– We might have a situation.
The weather forecast was very discouraging. Winds of over 15 meters per second, lots of snow everywhere, and the roads seemed to be “impassable”.
– What should we do?
– I say we drive slowly and see how it goes.
We turned the defrost on so we could actually see where we were going, we stopped to get some more gas and we started driving on number 1 towards Egilsstaðir, in northeast Iceland.
Ridiculous wind speeds, zero visibility and a road as white as our faces from our fear of dying right there.
– This is so not going to happen.
– Let’s go back to the camping grounds.
We hooked up to the electricity for the first time and turned the lights on inside while we yelled at the same time:
– Unlimited power! (you know, like Darth Sidious in Star Wars)
– Too bad the heating system’s not electrical.
Acceptance came faster than we expected. It was Sunday, and Easter Sunday, so a day of Netflix, sandwiches and delicious cookies that we found in the supermarket wasn’t really a terrible idea.
Considering that we had 4 episodes left from the last House of Cards season, it actually sounded like a good plan.
– Damn, Frank Underwood, you’re good.
So that was pretty much it. Being under the covers all afternoon looking at how the sun came out a bit every once in a while, just to be covered seconds later by a huge blizzard.
The only two times we went out was to go pee and to take a picture for the National Instameet that’ll happen in Mexico City next month.
The day went by incredibly fast. At 7.30 we went back to the pizza place (Daddi’s Pizza) and ordered the Mýfluga, a house special with smoked trout, cheese, cream cheese and pine nuts on top.
– This pizza is unique in the world. Said the owner while she yelled at the teenage boy working there to pick up the phone to delivery calls.
– And a Coke from that fridge, cause I’m sure if I get it room temperature, it’d be colder.
We are now checking the weather reports all the time, but tomorrow no matter what we need to get out of this little town and see what we have left.
– Let’s make snow angels.
– Are you drunk?
Some things you should know:
Road.is is a responsive website, very easy to use on your smartphone, and it works so that you can have a better idea of the driving and weather conditions. The whole thing’s divided by regions and by just clicking on one you get a full map with lots of information. It also offers emergency number, information for tourists and automatic weather alerts.
Vedur.is is another website that focuses entirely on the weather, and it has a very useful app version. The thing will give you a very exact forecast of wherever you are at that moment. A great thing is that it tells you wind speeds and shows you a whole map of the entire country with forecast. And it also sends you alerts in case something happens.
Finally there’s the app YR, a little more sophisticated but less specific in terms of little towns. Developed by the Danish Meteorologic Institute.
